Try Coloring Outside the Lines

Stacy Menzies Happy FixWhen my kinders color, they watch each other. Always, one will shout out “(fill in the blank) scribble scrabbled!” In big people terms, they colored in a messy outside the lines sort of way.

Sometimes it means they were careless. Sometimes it means they wanted to get the job done and get to the business of checking out books (I’m a librarian).

But sometimes, they are so excited to do something as simple as coloring, they do it with abandon. They don’t care about the colors they use. They don’t care if they stay inside the lines. And yes, it is messy. But isn’t that life?

There’s a time for staying inside the lines and a time for drawing new ones. Thinking outside the box. Being creative. Getting out of your comfort zone or the lines that define you.

How often are we presented with an opportunity that may be a little messy and, so, we turn it down? How would that opportunity have impacted how our own lines are drawn? Would it have expanded them giving us more room for color? Would it have brought new people into our orbit or helped us learn something from a new perspective?

Today, let your colors explode out of the lines, even if it makes you feel a little uncomfortable. Do something new, unexpected. Look for an opportunity. Maybe something you’ve wanted to try for a while. Be deliberate. Be a little messy. Take a chance. Everybody should have a little scribble scrabble in their lives.  #HappyFix #SelfCare
