I heard this quote yesterday and it really hit home.
It doesn’t matter how old you are, whether you are male or female or what your socioeconomic status is. We are all trying to fit in. To be normal.
We try to be part of the popular crowd in high school. Or maybe a jock. Or if that fails part of the group of kids who “don’t want to fit in.” News flash. They still want to fit in somewhere.
As adults, there are so many more places where we have to adjust who or what we are to fit in with a group. At work. In the neighborhood. Among friends. In Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.
We try to fit in by presenting ourselves as though we belong to that group, shifting what we do and say to be more likely to be perceived as “normal.” Unfortunately, that usually means putting down pieces of ourselves that may be the most interesting parts of who we are.
Why do we do this?
Why do we care about fitting in?
Because we do. We care about acceptance. We care about being included–even in things we don’t necessarily care about. We care about looking like we can keep up.
But when we try to be normal and fit in, we lose part of our true selves. The selves that can do amazing things.
We lose them because if we do those amazing things, then maybe we won’t fit in anymore. Maybe we are afraid others will judge us. They won’t like us. We will be on our own and that, my friends, can be scary.
It’s hard to keep up with so many personalities living in your body. Your work personality. You home personality. Your gym personality. Your spouse personality. What if you had just one. One that’s true? One that’s amazing? One that is all you?
Normal is safe. Normal is easy. Normal doesn’t rock the boat or take risks. Normal is who everybody wants us to be. Normal is, well, normal. But it’s not amazing.
Amazing is free. Amazing is magical. Amazing does great things. Amazing makes you the one everybody wants to fit in with. Amazing is truth.
Today, make it a point to observe. Just observe. Are you trying to be normal? Is there one area where you can give up normal and work toward amazing? You can. I know you can. We know you can. Most importantly you know you can. Now it’s up to you to do it. #HappyFix #SelfCare #MayaAngelou
